Step into a simpler time with a journey through Cambodia—the modest country with a grand and complex history. No matter what your itinerary holds, you can count on a lifetime of incredible memories on an Antipodeans trip to Cambodia. Whether it’s snorkelling in the crystal clear waters of the Sihanoukville beaches, checking out the bustling night markets of Phnom Penh, or simply pausing to watch the boats pass along the colourful Mekong River, each day brings new a adventure. Up Siem Reap way, a visit to Southeast Asia’s grandest monument—the legendary Angkor Temples, is a must. Here you’ll stand as millions of others have, by the towering remains of the mighty Khmer Empire for an experience that never ceases to impress—even after the tenth or hundredth visit.

“The people were the happiest I’ve ever met, even though they have practically nothing—constantly smiling, helpful and willing to learn. There is nothing more heart-warming than seeing the difference we made to their community.”

Jessica Taege, Nursing Student at University Of Queensland (Cambodia Placement)

The world you’ll explore

Whilst Cambodia certainly has no shortage of physical wonders, it’s the locals who will truly move you. These are people who have lived through a tumultuous history and constant political instability under the leadership of the Khmer Rouge. Not only that, Cambodia also has some of the lowest living standards in the world. With their ceaseless optimism, incredible warmth and unparalleled hospitality, you’ll find it hard to believe these people have been through so much.

One of the best ways to get to know the locals is over a shared meal. Food is a big part of the national identity in Cambodia, where meals are savoured and celebrated, whilst snacking in-between is also encouraged. For most Cambodians skipping a meal brings back memories of starvation under the Khmer Rouge regime. As for what’s on the menu, expect a lot of rice. It’s such a staple that Cambodians even greet one another by asking “Nyam bai howie nov (have you eaten rice yet)?”

The impact you’ll make

Make a lasting impact as you work directly with the locals outside Siem Reap and Phnom Penh. Although dependent on your Antipodeans program and the respective community needs, Expedition and Schoolies Unearthed projects may involve renovating, building and improving local homes and school facilities, including teacher accommodation, toilet blocks and vegetable gardens. Students may also assist local teachers in English class, reading books and playing games with the younger children.

University projects are wide reaching and varied, from Allied Health, Nursing and Oral Health-related placements; setting up primary health care camps and running health checks in rural villages to education programs and business development immersions.

The people who will have your back

For every Expedition or Schoolies Unearthed trip, you and your team will be assigned one of our expert leaders to help guide your adventure. Each with enough Frequent Flyer points to fund a family trip around the world, they’re seasoned pros when it comes to adventure travel. The leaders below may not be the same ones you get on your trip—but you get the idea.

This is Rob. He spent a year in South America learning Spanish and mentors at a youth outdoor education camp. He is also an Antipodeans leader.
