Colourful, chaotic and full of life, Vietnam is a series of sensory overloads set against backdrops of epic beauty. A thriving land of commerce and culture, its people are close to their history but look to the future with excitement and optimism. Today Vietnam is known for more than the American War (or as it’s known in Australia, the Vietnam War). It’s a foodie’s paradise, a world of breathtaking landscapes, with adventure at every turn and a million stories waiting to be uncovered.

In its lively city centres—Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi, Vietnam’s old-world charm meets a booming new economy. You’ll find pagodas—Vietnam’s customary shrines and temples, placed in-between new hotels and commercial shopping malls. The streets are just as much an adventure, as motorbikes, rickshaws (three-wheeled passenger carts) and even animals bustle to share space. Then amidst all the excitement, there are the local delicacies to enjoy on every corner. These fresh and flavoursome street eats make Vietnam a hit with foodies—especially when they come at super low prices.

“You’ll come back with a different perspective on life, you'll appreciate things more, and you will have experienced it all with a bunch of awesome mates—it's so much better than a typical holiday.”

Evan Chang, Student at Thames High School NZ (Vietnam Expedition)

The world you’ll explore

If you’re looking for a breather, Vietnam’s countryside is every bit as captivating as its bigger cities. From its emerald green rice paddies and lush jungles to its sprawling coastlines and white-sand beaches, the long country impresses from top to bottom. On the central coast the peaceful port city of Hoi An offers the perfect chance to sip Vietnamese iced coffee, take in the French colonial buildings and explore incredible markets.

Or you could take a boat ride through Halong Bay to admire the thousands of limestone islands making up this wonder of the world. No matter how the days are filled, a trip to Vietnam promises a sensational immersion into a world unlike anything back home.

The impact you’ll make

Make a lasting impact as you work directly with the hill tribes of Northwest Vietnam or communities in the south, close to the Mekong. Although your project will depend on your Antipodeans program and respective community needs, Expedition and Schoolies Unearthed teams may be involved in renovating classrooms and community kitchens, installing water tanks or building desks and bookshelves for school libraries.

University teams with a health orientation can expect to work in conjunction with Red Cross and Vietnamese Ministry of Health, assisting in hospitals or conducting primary health care programs and education for village-based patients. Antipodeans also work closely with speech pathology and occupational therapy faculties to provide on the ground therapy support, and develop sustainable, culturally relevant health promotion programs for young children.

The people who will have your back

For every Expedition or Schoolies Unearthed trip, you and your team will be assigned one of our expert leaders to help guide your adventure. Each with enough Frequent Flyer points to fund a family trip around the world, they’re seasoned pros when it comes to adventure travel. The leaders below may not be the same ones you get on your trip—but you get the idea.

Meet Lee. He's been leading trips since 2009. He’s so good at what he does, we put him in charge of recruiting all our other amazing leaders. Legend.
