With its tendency for the unexpected, India offers a life-shaping experience like no other. Here, the incredible mix of people, landscapes and culture will leave you feeling excited, overwhelmed and inspired—all at the same time. During a trip like this, you won’t just see one new country—you’ll see the whole world from a new perspective.
From the breathtaking foothills of the Himalayas to the Dravidian area, there’s unbelievable diversity between the top and bottom parts of India. Just don’t expect to fit it all in one trip—India is made up of 29 different states. Regardless of where you go you’re bound to find a culinary adventure like no other.
“I would tell other students to go with Antipodeans because opportunities to travel like this, at our age, are few and far between. Life is short and we are young!"
Moira Seward, Student at Launceston Church Grammar School (India Expedition)
The world you’ll explore
Fun fact: India has one of the oldest cultures in the world. Pay close attention to the incredible markets, lakes, temples and forts your team comes across—many of these will date back to when India’s civilisation first began, nearly 4,500 years ago. Spirituality is also a big part of daily life here: between Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism and Sikhism you’ll have plenty of chances to zen out in the birthplace of yoga.
On top of it all you’ll find a culinary adventure like no other in India. Its incredible smorgasbord of (mostly) vegetable-based curries, spices and treats will blow away even the most dedicated of meat eaters. Just remember to eat with your right hand only—the left is for cleaning and other less hygienic activities.
The impact you’ll make
Make a lasting impact as you work directly with the locals in mountain or Tibetan communities. Although dependent on your Antipodeans program and the respective community needs, Expedition projects in India may involve renovating or building school facilities, communal buildings or monasteries and helping out in English classes as you read books and play games with local children.
Projects for universities typically focus on Nursing and Physiotherapy placements in the stunning city of Palampur in India’s North. Here Antipodeans teams work closely with local hospitals and clinics to provide primary health care and health education in a range of clinical settings. University placements are always dependent on your course and Faculty.
“Travelling to India was one of the most rewarding experiences I’ve had. The smile on the kids’ faces gives me goosebumps every time! When you see that they are understanding something you’ve taught them, it’s an indescribable feeling.”
Emily Jacobs, Student (India Expedition)
The people who will have your back
For every Expedition trip to India, you and your team will be assigned one of our expert leaders to help guide your adventure. Each with enough Frequent Flyer points to fund a family trip around the world, they’re seasoned pros when it comes to adventure travel. The leaders below may not be the same ones you get on your trip—but you get the idea.
This is Michael. He once spent 8 months volunteering and backpacking through India and Central America. He’s now an assistant school principal and an Antipodeans leader.
